Oklahoma needs to take advantage of this time of high prices for natural resources to increase the skills of its people and markedly improve its infrastructure. In a few words -- better jobs which include health insurance because of better skills, for more people. To secure these better jobs, we must also ensure the business climate in Oklahoma is competitive with other states. To be certain that Oklahomans have the skills required for these better jobs, we need increased funding for education, particularly Career Tech, and rigorous oversight to be certain that these funds are well spent. We also must support public and higher education so that the graduates will be prepared to be productive and contributing citizens. Finally, we must improve our roads, bridges and the physical infrastructure of Oklahoma. As an engineer and educator, I believe I am uniquely qualified to contribute to the development, implementation and oversight of these initiatives.
Oklahoma needs to ensure that all aspects of its educational system, particularly Career Tech, have increased funding as well as rigorous legislative oversight to be certain it is meeting the needs of the citizens and the private sector. Due to global competition, the state must have a sustained effort to constantly update and increase the skills of its citizens. Continuous work force development is crucial to our collective future.
Better Business
Oklahoma needs to develop and sustain a pro--growth business climate which is competitive with that of other states. This will require a rigorous review of our tax policies as well as programs to provide incentives for businesses to develop and/or increase jobs which have appropriate salaries and benefits. The overall objective should be to increase business activity in Oklahoma thereby increasing the number and quality of jobs as well as the revenues to the state. These increased revenues should be used to address our social and physical needs.
Better Bridges
There is no reason why Oklahoma should have so many failure-critical bridges and so many miles of its highway system which are in disrepair. It will undoubtedly take many years to solve this problem but the most urgent problems must be addressed now. As an engineer, I would hope to be among those providing legislative oversight of this issue.
Better Education
Education, in all its aspects is crucial to the future economic and social success of Oklahoma. As a policy matter, educational administrators at all levels must be given additional flexibility as well as additional responsibility to perform. If they do not perform, they should be removed. Increased funding but increased expectations from administrators should be our goal..
